CREDA
The Centre de Recherche et de Documentation sur les Amériques (CREDA UMR 7227) is specialized in the social sciences of the Americas, under the joint supervision of Sorbonne Nouvelle University, the CNRS and since 2025 the IRD.
In 1968, geographer Pierre Monbeig founded CREDAL (Centre de recherche et de documentation sur l'Amérique latine), which grew out of fundamental links with IHEAL, Maison de l'Amérique latine and EHESS. At the start of the 21st century, in 2010, the CREDA played a leading role in the creation of the GIS Institut des Amériques (IDA), opening up to North America.
Headed by Franck Poupeau (Professor of Sociology) since 2024, this research unit currently has thirty-five permanent members (researchers, teacher-researchers) and seventy-five doctoral students, a third of whom are funded, enrolled in the Sorbonne Nouvelle University Doctoral School 122 (“Latin Europe, Latin America”) and four administrative staff. The laboratory's activities are supported by long-established international research networks in the Americas and Europe, giving it a structuring role in Latin American studies in France and internationally.
